February 4, 2020
We wanted to give everyone an update from an event we handled over the weekend. Remember this one?
"20020085: On February 1, 2020, at about 2:37 p.m., Officer Mattson took a report of a stolen vehicle. He is still working on the report, so we can’t tell you what the outcome is, but we’ll keep you updated if anything comes of it."
We are happy to report that we were able to solve this case, thanks to some great work from Sgt. Matthews. Here is how it went down. Sgt. Matthews ended up in the Virginian Lodge parking lot after missing his turn to go someplace else. Since he was there, he decided to circle the building to look for the stolen vehicle. He found it, unoccupied and locked. Looking through the windows, Sgt. Matthews noticed a pack of Marlboro cigarettes. Hmmm, a clue? Sgt. Matthews thought so, and started checking outside each hotel room door in that area, looking for any with a pile of Marlboro cigarette butts. He found one and knocked on the door. No one came to the door, so he knocked next door and asked if they knew who their neighbor was. As it happened, they did and provided us with a name. Sgt. Matthews searched the property and later found the man, who confessed to stealing the truck. He was able to recover the keys from the man’s room and gave the 32 year old Witchita, KS man a citation for Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle. Good work, Sgt. Matthews.
20020441: On February 4, 2020, at about 6 p.m., Cpl. Smith responded to a report of a Runaway. We can’t say much because this involves a 14 year old juvenile, but Cpl. Smith did a lot of leg work to track the juvenile down and was able to have a deputy from the sheriff’s office make a traffic stop on the vehicle they were in. Thanks for the assist, deputy. The juvenile was ultimately released back to their parents.
20020450: On February 4, 2020, at about 9:25 p.m., Sgt. Kellams responded to a report of a man who had followed a female to her home, then backed into the driveway. As it turned out, the man was parked in his own driveway and lives near the female. Sgt. Kellams spoke with both parties involved and learned there was a previous event in which the male had been attacked by the woman’s dogs. The woman claimed the man had yelled at and followed her. The male denied doing so and demanded the officer write a report for the previous incident in which he had been attacked by the woman’s dogs. He became upset when Sgt. Kellams told him he wouldn’t write a report for an event that had already been documented. Sgt. Kellams wrote a report, but one related to this disturbance so we can continue to monitor any further problems between these two individuals.
20020451: On February 4, 2020, at about 9:40 p.m., Cpl. P. Smith and RO White responded to a fight at the Cowboy Bar. Staff directed them to a man who was creating a disturbance. While attempting to talk to the obviously intoxicated man, he became aggressive, yelling at bystanders in attempts to pick fights. Keep in mind he was being contacted by police officers while this is happening. Even after we handcuffed him, he continued to be aggressive. Cpl. P. Smith and RO White arrested the 25 year old Jackson, WY man for Public Intoxication. He continued to be aggressive during the transport to the jail, yelling, screaming and finally spitting on the officer doing the transport. Let’s be honest, it’s hard to keep your cool when people are acting like that, but dealing with difficult people comes with the job and we maintain our professionalism. We did charge the man with assaulting a police officer.
The end…for today.
