Police Blotter
February 7-9, 2020
There is a lot of ground to cover, so let’s get right to the blotter.
20020099: Found Property (iPhone).
20020705: On February 7, 2020, at about 9:25 a.m., Officer Kynett responded to a report of Harassment. This officer’s name is probably new for most of you. We hired her recently as a reserve officer, meaning she is a part-time officer who only works a few days out of the month. She’s a great officer and we’re happy to have the help. She’ll be training with Cpl. Jones until she knows the ins and outs of being a police officer in Jackson, WY. In this case, she met with the victim who was receiving unwanted text messages on her phone over the course of the last year. The victim blocked the number, but started receiving messages from other numbers with similar content that suggested they were coming from the same person. The victim asked us to document the incident and no further action is being taken at this time. If this continues to be a problem, the victim may choose to move forward with possibly criminal charges.
20020751: On February 7, 2020, at about 2:03 p.m., Officer Kynett and Cpl. Jones were dispatched to a report of a child choking. They arrived and began CPR until EMS arrived. We are sorry to report the child did not survive. Our heart goes out to the family who are faced with this terrible tragedy.
20020757: On February 7, 2020, at about 3:01 p.m., Officer Peery responded to do a Welfare Check on a 14 year old juvenile. It was reported the juvenile had hurt themselves. We are being deliberately vague here because this incident involves a juvenile, but Officer Peery made contact and ultimately determined they were healthy and had not harmed themselves in any way.
20020776: On February 7, 2020, at about 6:34 p.m., Officer Gerlach responded to a report of a person who had called 911, but then hung up. You should know that all 911 calls are responded to in some way. If you accidentally "butt dial" 911, the dispatcher will call you back to make sure everything is, okay. If your child calls, we will call back or respond. If you get in an argument with your boyfriend/girlfriend or whomever and call, then hang up, we will respond to make sure everyone is, alright. In this case, Officer Gerlach was able to find the person and determine they were having mental health issues that needed addressed. He took the person to the hospital to be evaluated.
20020825: On February 8, 2020, at about 10:00 a.m., Cpl. P. Smith responded to someone having damaged the medicine man/fortune telling machine…again…for about the fourth time. Maybe it’s the same person, maybe not, but it looks like the owner is going to put up a camera to catch the person(s) responsible the next time they do it.
20020869: This is the report of the two intoxicated men arrested at the airport after creating a disturbance on the plane. We’ve already put out a separate press release, so we’ll let you read it there.
20020892: On February 8, 2020, at about 9:31 p.m., RO White responded to a report of Malicious Mischief. The victim reported someone had thrown eggs and cupcakes at their house. I guess a person could think that’s funny unless they’re the ones who have to clean it up. The victim certainly wasn’t happy about having their property defaced. Fortunately, they had an idea who had done it. We were directed to the right place, found the suspects and were able to give them citations for defacing someone else’s property.
20020904: On February 9, 2020, at about 1:17 a.m., Sgt. Kellams responded to a report of a six person fight in front of the Cowboy Bar. He made contact with one of the men and attempted to put him into handcuffs so he could continue his investigation safely without the risk of being punched in the head. We should stop here and say that just because we put handcuffs on you, it doesn’t mean you will go to jail. Handcuffs come off just as easy as they go on, so be patient, let us work through the problem and if you’ve done nothing wrong, you will go free. That’s not what happened here though. The man began struggling with Sgt. Kellams and the sergeant had to force the man to the ground where he continue to struggle. Maybe you can imagine what it was like for Sgt. Kellams. He’s the only officer at a fight call, he is outnumbered and surrounded by persons in varying degrees of intoxication and fighting with a man on the ground. Things can go bad fast in a scenario like this. Fortunately, back-up arrived and Sgt. Kellams was able to get the him handcuffed and arrest the 38 year old Salem, NH man for Public Intoxication. A big thank you to our sheriff’s office brothers who came to help. What happened with the fight? By the time we got the man arrested for Public Intoxication, we could not find anyone involved in the original fight. Looks like they made a hasty exit while we were otherwise occupied.
20020910: On February 9, 2020, at about 2:30 a.m., Officer Shreve responded to a report of an intoxicated male stumbling around on East Broadway. The person reporting was worried the man would pass out and freeze in the single digit temperatures. Thank you for the call. We think most people in Jackson would agree we keep a sharp eye out for these kind of people, but we can’t be everywhere at once. We certainly don’t want anyone to get hurt because they were too drunk to get themselves home safely. Officer Shreve found the man and who was so intoxicated he could barely speak. He arrested the 31 year old Riverton, WY man. His portable breath test was a .265%.
20020988: On February 9, 2020, at about 11:23 a.m., RO White responded to a suicidal subject. She assessed the person and determined they needed evaluation and took them to the hospital. The person later became violent and we had to respond again to assist medical staff in maintaining control. This is scary stuff if you’ve never been part of something like this. Imagine you are the person who has to force your way into the room, grab the person who’s out of control and restrain them without hurting them. You come to appreciate your brother and sister cops quite a lot.
