Police Blotter

March 6-8, 2020

You may or may not have ever wondered, but how do we determine which officer gets to write which reports?  It’s easy, we take turns.  Our super-awesome Teton County dispatchers keep track of who takes what calls and then gives them to us in turn, unless we are already occupied.  Generally, that’s how it works, but we will sometimes take a call from another officer because we’re closer or because we know they already have a bunch of work to do and want to give them a break.  Now you know.

Blotter time!

20030502:  Is anyone wondering why there are a bunch of trees down on Snow King Avenue?  Here is why.  On March 6, 2020, at about 4:31 a.m., Officer Gerlach and Sgt. Ruschill were dispatched to a collision with injuries.  They learned a 1994 Toyota  4Runner was driving westbound on Snow King Avenue when the vehicle left the roadway and struck a number of the trees, causing disabling damage.  The people in the car did not have any apparent injury, but the driver was found to be intoxicated.  Officer Gerlach arrested the 32 year old Wilson, WY man who was already on probation for a previous DUI in 2018.  We are really lucky there were no pedestrians in the area when this accident happened.  We could be having a funeral instead of replacing a few trees.

20030504:  Collision Hit/Run.  No suspects at this time.

20030521:  On March 6, 2020, at about 9:18 a.m., Cpl. Jones went over to the probation and parole office to give them a helping hand.  One of their probationers wasn’t abiding by the terms of his probation and they needed him taken to the jail.  Cpl. Jones, being the helpful kind of guy he is, was happy to arrest the 34 year old Jackson, WY man and have him booked into the jail at Probation & Parole’s request.

20030525:  On March 6, 2020, at about 9:38 a.m., Officer Mattson responded to a report of a Sexual Assault.  His investigation revealed one male subject had touched another male subject’s anus over his clothing.  The incident was captured on video and the suspect was arrested for 3rd Degree Sexual Assault.

20030550:  On March 6, 2020, at about 1:00 p.m., Sgt. Matthews responded to assist a family in dealing with issues related to their son’s drug use.  He obtained permission to search from both family and son and found items of marijuana paraphernalia.  The young man wanted to help from the court in dealing with his issues and so Sgt. Matthews cited the 20 year old Jackson, WY man for possessing a controlled substance.

20030601:  On March 6, 2020, at about 9:50 p.m., Sgt. Ruschill responded to a report of the odor of marijuana at a hotel.  Yep, it’s still illegal.  The odor was so strong, the people in the next room could smell it.  While speaking with the reporting person, the occupant of that room stepped out.  The report describes it like a Cheech & Chong moment with the odor of marijuana wafting out the door.  Knowing he was busted, the occupant invited officers in and gave them his marijuana.  We wrote him a ticket and moved on to other problems.

20030612:  On March 7, 2020, at about 1:31 a.m., Officer Proctor observed a man sitting on a bench on the boardwalk slumped over with his head in his shirt.  He stopped to check on the man’s welfare and found him to be very intoxicated.  The man couldn’t find his hotel, was cold, and had been wondering around trying to find it unsuccessfully.  He tried to call friends too, but couldn’t get ahold of anyone to come get him.  Officer Proctor had to arrest the 33 year old San Francisco, CA man for Public Intoxication.

20030616:  On March 7, 2020, at about 2:51 a.m., Officer Proctor responded to a disturbance call between a man and woman.  Officers learned the couple had an argument because they woman was driving while intoxicated.  The man took her keys and walked home, leaving her in the car.  When officers contacted him, he verified his girlfriend had been driving.  That being the case, Officer Proctor administered field sobriety tests.  The 23 year old Jackson, WY woman did poorly on the tests and had to be arrested for DUI.  It will be interesting to see if this relationship survives this incident.

20030698:  On March 7, 2020, at about 5:45 p.m., Cpl. P. Smith responded to the Cowboy Bar for a False ID.  He contacted a woman who claimed her ID was real, not fake as the doorman was suggesting.  This kind of thing is easy enough to check, so Cpl. P. Smith contacted the dispatch center with the information on the ID presented.  Yep, it was fake.  Cpl. P. Smith arrested the 20 year old Macomb, MI woman for the fake ID and being a minor under the influence.  He also had to charge her with possession of a controlled substance when jail staff found pills in her pockets for which she did not have a prescription.

20030757:  On March 8, 2020, at about 8:50 a.m., Cpl. P. Smith responded to a residence for a report of Trespassing.  The woman had apparently spent the night in a room without the knowledge or consent of the owner.  When asked to leave she refused, so they called the police department.  Cpl. P. Smith tried to reason with the woman, but was not able to and eventually had to arrest the 41 year old Houston, TX woman for Trespassing.
